Choosing the Domain for you...

Choosing the right domain for your web site is one of the most important decisions you have to make before you are able to upload your site to the internet and begin watching the hits flood in. You should try to choose a domain that has some sort of relevance to your site, this will help people understand what your site has to offer before they even see the page, you can also try to think of a domain name that will attract people to your site if they are intrigued by the domain they will want to see more.

What's the Difference .com and .co.uk...

I am sure you have all been to many different sites and often wondered why some have .com or some have .co.uk at the end of there domains, well if your interested then here is a list of some of the different domain extensions and what they were created to be used for, but this is not a strict rule because anyone from any country can register .com and .co.uk domains.

  • .Com stands for commercial and is the most used extension in the world today, because .com domains are registered in the US they are associated with american site's but like i just said anyone can register for a .com domain so it is not necessarily an american company.
  • .Co.uk stands for commercial UK and is the most used domain extension in the UK.
  • .Org.uk, an extension for non-commercial UK organizations.
  • .Org meaning organization usually used by non-profit groups
  • .Net stands for "network" and is most commonly used by Internet service providers, web-hosting companies or other businesses that are directly involved in the infrastructure of the Internet.

Free Domains.

There are lots of web sites that offer free domains, which you may wish to sign up for if you are running your own web server and are just testing a site, or maybe if the site is just for people at work or friends to see. Usually the site's who offer free domains require that you have there name somehow built into your domain like www.freedomain.example.com or www.example.com.freedomain. If you want a more unique domain (which i would recommend) with the popular extensions such as .com or .co.uk, then see below.

Buying your domain.

You can get .com and .co.uk domains for free when you buy a web hosting package, really the domain is just included in the price. If you don't want to buy a web hosting package yet but just want to make sure you get the domain you want, or maybe you want to set the domain up for email forwarding, so you can allow people to email you at user@mywebsite.com, then you can buy them separate from the hosting packages at lots of different companies, just search on google for domain names, they are quite cheap maybe around £12 for two years. If you want to see what i recommend then you can go to the link reviews page.
